Excursion*

The organization of JIA 2017 proposes two excursions to take place on Saturday morning, June 10th.

One of the excursions will take place at the archaeological site of Atapuerca, which is World Heritage Site of UNESCO since the year 2000. The quantity, quality, and age of the human and faunal remains found at Atapuerca makes it a landmark for understanding Human Evolution. These remains delayed the date of human occupation in Europe up to 1.4 million years ago.

The other excursion will head to the archaeological site of Clunia, an ancient Roman city located around 90 km from the city of Burgos. Clunia was founded over a mount close to a Pre-Roman settlement called Cluniaco, or Kolounioukou, belonging to a Celtiberian tribe. Years later, the city was founded ex novo during the time of Emperor Tiberius (14-37AD) acquiring the status of municipium. The greatest splendor comes during the 1st and 2nd century AD, becoming one of the most important cities in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Clunia survives until the end of the 7th during the Visigothic era.
